South Melbourne came out triumph over Australian Championship rivals Preston Lions on Sunday Night at Lakeside Stadium. With the second edition of the “Big Show” a big crowd packed into Lakeside Stadium to watch 10th placed South Melbourne and 6th placed Preston Lions go head to head, last time the two faced in March Preston came out on top with a 2-0 win.
The first half got off to a slow start with a 0-0 scoreline at the break however a 55th minute goal thanks to Brandon Lauton the 1-0 scoreline didn’t last long for Preston with an own-goal coming off the boot of Aaron Anderson in the 65th minute. Both teams desperate for a winner had chances in the next 25 minutes but no chance was taken like Max Mikkola’s in the 90th minute with a bicycle kick that will go down in South Melbourne history.
Commentator Joey Lynch couldn’t hold the excitement as he screamed “Oh My God” down the microphone as Max Mikkola ran to the stands to celebrate with the South Melbourne faithful.
South Melbourne who have gone through changes this season already and had a very poor start now seem clear of the relegation danger zone with Port Melbourne and the Melbourne Knights seemingly the two to fall down the Victorian Football Pyramid into VPL1.
